What is contraception?
If you don’t want to fall pregnant, you have to use some
form of prevention. Contraceptive methods include
condoms, the contraceptive pill, having an IUD
inserted, the contraceptive injection or abstinence
from sexual intercourse.
Let's talk
contraceptive
injections
What is the contraceptive injection?
It is an injection given to women at regular intervals,
on prescription, to prevent pregnancy.
What is the main benefit of the
injection over other methods if you are sexually active?
The injection is great for women who worry about
remembering to take the pill every day, or who
don’t want to bother with condoms during sexual intercourse. It lasts for a specific interval before you need another injection.
Where do I get the injection?
From your Clicks Clinic Sister with a doctor’s prescription. She can administer the injection and will be able to answer any questions you may have.
Who should not use the injection?
- Women who have breast cancer or other hormonedependent cancers
- If you have vaginal bleeding
- If you suffer from migraines, liver problems or
osteoporosis (brittle bones) or have a history of
blood clots (thrombosis)
- If you have intense itching (cholestatic pruritis)
- Consult with your doctor for more information
How much does it cost?
It depends on which injection has been prescribed by
your doctor. Ask your Clicks Pharmacist.

How does it work?
It works in 3 ways:
- It stops the female from ovulating (producing eggs)
- It thickens the mucous in the cervix and prevents sperm from getting through
- It makes it difficult for the egg to attach to the lining of the womb
When should I start with the injection?
- In the first 5 days of your period (menstruation)
- Any time after these first 5 days you must still use precautionary methods, preferably condoms
How often do I need an injection?
Certain contraceptive injections every 2 months and others every 3 months. This can also vary, depending on the type of injection your doctor has prescribed for you.
