We all love a good cheat day, but if you want a clearer complexion, you have to pay attention to what you're eating too. Experts agree that your diet can play a big role in your skin's health. So, what should we be eating?

Dr Dilshaad Asmal, a dermatologist at Rondebosch Aesthetics, advises that “loading up on whole foods like grains, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables is the secret to great looking skin”. She says these superfoods provide essential minerals and vitamins that support overall skin health.

Sounds pretty good, right? But remember, it's not just about what's on your plate. Environmental factors can also impact the appearance of your skin. So, don't forget to fine-tune your skincare regime and use products suited to your skin type. By paying attention to both your diet and your skincare, you can work towards achieving clearer and healthier-looking skin.

Dr Asmal recommends the following foods for your skin.

1. Improve skin elasticity

Avocado: “This superfood, which is on every café menu, is packed with healthy fats and antioxidants that can help improve skin elasticity and reduce inflammation,” says Dr Asmal. Plus, it's great for making guacamole, a nutritious dip for game night, and boosting your bros' skin one dip at a time.

2. Fight the signs of ageing

Blueberries: According to Dr Asmal, these little powerhouses are packed full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can help combat the signs of ageing and protect against environmental damage. Plus, who can say no to such a sweet addition to your morning smoothie?

3. Boost collagen production

Spinach: This leafy green is loaded with nutrients like vitamin C, which can help boost collagen production and keep your skin looking clearer, explains Dr Asmal. Plus, eating one cup of this leafy green packed with magnesium boosts your metabolism, and helps maintain muscle and nerve function.

4. Protect against sun damage

Almonds: “These tasty nuts are a great source of vitamin E, which can help protect your skin from sun damage, and keep it hydrated and supple,” says Dr Asmal. Enjoy them in moderation, as they are calorie dense.

5. Reduce inflammation

Salmon: “There’s a thin layer of oil on your skin that helps you maintain a fresh appearance, and it can only flourish if it keeps getting the ‘good fat", says Dr Asmal. “Salmon is jam-packed with omega 3 fatty acids, which feed that layer of oil.“ Plus, salmon also has anti-inflammatory properties and helps maintain the levels of collagen and elastin in the skin,” she adds. Mackerel and sardines are also high in omega-3s.

6. Promote hydration

Cucumber: “Consuming water-rich foods such as cucumbers and watermelon helps keep the skin hydrated, promoting elasticity and a healthy appearance,” says Dr Asmal. These foods also provide essential vitamins and antioxidants that contribute to overall skin health. In addition, make sure you are drinking at least six glasses a day to stay hydrated and healthy. From helping your skin maintain elasticity, to reducing wrinkles and fine lines, water can do amazing things for your skin and for your overall health.
