Hands up for winter!

14 June 2024 | By Leila Petersen

While it’s important to take care of the skin on your face, it’s just as important to take care of your hands, which take an extra beating in winter. Here’s how…

Winter is hard on our hands. The cold temperatures outside and drying heat inside can leave our hands extra dry, chapped, and even a little tender. The good news? With just a few adjustments and additions you can maintain smooth, supple, soft hands all season.

Gentle wash

Frequent hand washing with hot water and soap can strip natural oils from your skin. The solution: switch to moisturising hand soap infused with nourishing ingredients such as honey, aloe vera, and shea butter. Use warm not hot water, pat your hands dry, and apply a moisturiser right away.

Helping hand (cream)

Hand creams are the most efficient and effective way to protect our hands from daily stressors, as well as improve the texture and health of the skin. More suited to care for your hands than a regular cream, hand creams tend to be richer than body moisturisers and often include hydrating and protecting ingredients that help soothe cracked hands and prevent further irritation. When it comes to application there is no such thing as using too much, so slather on generously and as often as you need throughout the day.

Scrub up

Gently exfoliating the back of your hands once a week will help slough away dead skin cells (which will allow better penetration of moisturiser) and leave your hands looking and feeling silky smooth. You can either use your regular facial exfoliant or for a DIY fix, mix a bit of coconut oil and sugar, then rub gently on your hands in circular motions.

Treat them overnight

Give your hands some extra TLC by slathering them with either an overnight hand treatment, hand balm, or a petroleum-based moisturiser such as Vaseline. Cover your hands with soft gloves or socks while you sleep, and you’ll wake with softer, smoother-looking skin and cuticles.

SPF

We often forget that our hands are exposed to the sun and need protection too. Applying at least SPF 30 on your hands daily is crucial to shield them from the sun's rays and prevent UV damage, and from accelerated skin ageing.

Cuticle care

Your cuticles and nails are sensitive to harsh winter weather just like the rest of your hands. Massaging nail oil into your nails and around them will help keep your cuticles healthy and your nails strong.

Room to groom

Preventing nail breakage in cold weather requires good nail care. Incorporating nail treatment products that aid in strengthening your nails and keeping your nails trimmed short and shaped will reduce the likelihood of snagging and breaking. And remember when filing your nails, make sure you go in one direction as back-and-forth motion can weaken them.
