Summer days are almost here which means it's time to step out in sandals or hit the beach barefoot. But after a long winter of keeping our feet snug inside socks, tights and boots, chances are they have been neglected and aren’t looking their best. Think cracked heels, neglected nails, and dryness. The good news is there’s a host of quick and easy tweaks that you can incorporate into your daily routine that will have your feet looking great in no time.

Soak and soothe

Apart from the fact that it’s a great way to sit back and relax for a few minutes, soaking your feet has a plethora of benefits. It helps soften rough patches and nails, boosts circulation, soothes cracked and dry skin and makes exfoliating dead skin easier. You can either set up a footbath in a bowl or soak your whole self in the bath. Another great tip is to add some mineral salts, such as Epsom salt, which is known to assist in detoxifying feet, ease inflammation, aid in exfoliation, and ward off infections.

Exfoliate

Our feet do a lot for is so it’s completely normal if hard skin forms underneath (this is actually a protective barrier) and for dry or cracked patches to appear. To help erase dead skin, exfoliating your feet is key. A granular scrub infused with nourishing oils is a great choice as you’ll reap the benefits of deep hydration too. Don’t be too aggressive as this could lead to your feet being even more dry.

Buff

No amount of foot cream will cut it if there's hard, dry skin lingering around your heels and toes - and buffing them away is a great solution. Start by using a foot file or pumice stone to remove hard skin and calluses. Be careful not to overdo it and to only buff very hard and dry areas of skin. Not only does a buffer not adhere as well to wet skin (therefore not as effective) but if your feet are prone to cracks in the skin, water will weaken the tissues, making the crack more likely to open up.

Hit the nail

Keeping your toenails short not only looks neat and clean but also is important for avoiding ingrown nails. Start by trimming your nails and then filing them into a neat shape. Lastly, tend to your cuticles. Apply cuticle oil and leave for one minute. Next, using a cuticle pusher, gently guide the cuticles back into place. Remember to not over-push or scrape the nails.

Moisturise

Intensive hydration is the key to keeping your feet soft and smooth. Opt for a rich foot-specific moisturiser which is usually more heavy-duty than a standard body moisturiser formula and take your time to massage the product into the skin, including the soles and ankles. As feet can get dehydrated very quickly, apply moisturiser as soon as you step out of the shower or bath to increase absorption.

Paint the town

Summer is the perfect time to experiment and be creative when it comes to your polish. And for 2023 the brighter the better! While red, pink, orange and coral will always be go-to summer hues, cobalt blue and neon shades are popular too. But for the latest trend, it must be pastel shades such as lavender, light green, pale pink, powder blue and yellow.
