Here’s why you should switch your foundation for autumn/winter
As we move into the cooler months, your skin starts to change. It may feel drier, look a little duller, and your foundation might not ‘sit’ the way it did in January. To help navigate this seasonal shift, we spoke to pro makeup artist and content creator Renée De Wit.
What happens as the season shifts
Colder weather and indoor heating can leave skin feeling dry, tight and sometimes more sensitive. Less sun exposure often means your complexion becomes slightly lighter. These changes affect both the way the foundation sits on the skin and how well the shade matches.
“In cooler months, skin needs more hydration and a softer approach to application,” says Renée.
Prep is key
Skincare plays a big role in how your foundation looks. “Hydrated skin is the starting point,” explains Renée. Without proper hydration, even the best foundation will not sit well. “Start with a gentle cleanser, followed by a hydrating serum and moisturiser. Let everything absorb properly before applying foundation.”
Supporting your skin barrier is also important, especially if your skin feels dry or sensitive. A moisturiser rich in ceramides underneath your base can help rebalance, restore and renew the skin barrier, improving how your foundation sits. Renée also stresses that gentle exfoliation every two weeks helps remove dry, flaky buildup so your base applies more evenly.
Rethink your formula
If your foundation starts to look flat or to cling to dry areas, the formula may be the issue. Skin during this time of year responds better to hydrating, light-reflective finishes that restore a natural glow. “Foundations with a natural or radiant finish are more forgiving,” says Renée. “They help keep the skin looking healthy.” Opt for luminous formulas or add a subtle glow product underneath or on top of your base to soften the look of the skin and create a smoother, more refreshed finish.
If you prefer a more natural look, you do not have to rely on a full coverage foundation. A lightweight skin tint or targeted concealer can give you a fresh, even finish without feeling heavy. Apply concealer only where needed and blend it out so your natural skin shows through.
Skincare-infused foundations are also a great option during cooler months. These formulas combine coverage with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerine and ceramides to support hydration and keep skin comfortable throughout the day.
Lighten up
As your summer tan fades, your foundation may start to look slightly too deep or warm. Choosing a slightly lighter or more neutral shade can help keep your complexion looking fresh and natural. It is also important to check your match beyond your face. Your neck and chest can sometimes appear a different tone, so always test your foundation in natural light to ensure everything blends seamlessly.
Change your application technique
You do not always need more product to improve your foundation. Sometimes it is about how you apply it. Using a slightly damp sponge can help sheer out the foundation and blend it more evenly. Warming the product between your fingers before applying and pressing it into the skin helps it melt in for a more natural finish. Apply in light layers and build coverage only where needed to prevent the foundation from looking heavy or settling into dry areas.
How to make your current foundation work for cooler weather
“You do not always need a new foundation for this season,” says Renée. “You can adapt what you already have.” Here are her simple tips:
• Invest in a primer
A hydrating primer can help foundation apply more smoothly and prevent it from catching on dry areas. It also improves how long your makeup lasts. Renée also suggests mixing a drop of illuminating primer into your foundation for a soft, healthy glow.
• Mix in moisturizer
If your foundation feels heavy or looks dry, mix in a small amount of moisturiser. This softens coverage and adds hydration, and can help if your shade feels slightly too dark. “Think of it as customising your foundation,” says Renée. “You are making it work for your skin right now.” She adds that compatibility matters - your moisturiser and foundation should both be water-based or both oil-based so they blend properly.
