How to match your makeup to your hair
Thinking of rocking a bold hair colour, but not sure how to change up your eyeshadow or lipstick? These tips will help match your mane to your makeup.
There’s nothing like a new hair colour to change your aesthetic and shift your mood but this also means the colours in your makeup bag will need to adjust to your new colour-do too. Whether you go pink or take the plunge with sky blue, applying the correct makeup pigments will allow your hair colour to shine through. The best part is it also gives you the opportunity to explore new varieties of shadows, blush, and lip colours.
Pink hair
The trick to rocking this bold colour is to keep the rest of your makeup subtle. Pink hair looks great with monochromatic makeup or colours within the same colour family of pinks - think purples, reds, and oranges. To avoid looking washed out, define your eyes by lining the waterline with an eye pencil and adding lots of mascara. When it comes to skin, opt for a foundation with a dewy finish and a pop of colour on the cheeks. Lastly, for lips, anything goes - you could match your lipstick with the same pink as your hair, go glossy, or even make a statement with a bold magenta pout.
Blue hair
With blue hair, you want to add some colour to your face to avoid looking washed out. However, the key is to pick one feature – eyes or lips or cheeks - to play up and then downplay the rest. For medium to dark skin tones consider warmer shades such as bronze, corals, purple, and browns on eyes. For those with lighter skin tones, use cooler colours such as pastel pink and lavender to complement your hair. Add some glow to your skin with a tinted moisturiser as well as applying blushes in coral and soft pinks. Neutrals would look best on the lips; you could try a soft pink gloss to add some shine.
Purple hair
From vivid violets to light lilac, purple is one of the most fun and versatile shades that complements every skin tone. A rule of thumb with purple hair: light purple goes well with a lighter eyeshadow (lilac, light pink, and silver), and darker purple shades will work with a dark eyeshadow (blue, green and brown). However, if you are still not sure what colours to opt for, sticking to a more natural and minimal makeup look may be your best bet - think eyeshadow in earthly shades and lots of mascara paired with a glossy nude lip.
Red hair
For those sporting fiery locks, it’s all about creating balance with your makeup since your coppery locks already make a major statement and too much colour can overwhelm your face. Whether your locks are dark or light, natural shades always pair nicely. Copper and earth-toned eyeshadows are perfect on most redheads, but if you’re feeling bold, experiment with plums, greens, and greys. Since red hair already adds warmth to your complexion, go light on blush. Think soft pinks or peach dusted only on the apples of your cheeks. As for lips, keep them neutral by reaching for rosy shades or a clear gloss.
