12 February 2024 | By Leila Petersen

Applying your false eyelashes correctly can take a while to master; removing them carefully is the next important step.

Tips for applying false eyelashes

1. Handle your lashes with a tweezer as this will prevent you from damaging them and gently bend the lashes in a U-shape to make them more flexible.

2. The first time you wear a new set of false lashes, you may need to trim the length of the band so that it doesn’t poke in at one or both corners. Hold the lash up to your eye. It should fall just short of your natural eye length, and if they are longer, trim them.

3. Apply lash glue along the lash band and leave it for around 30 seconds until it dries to a tacky consistency.

4. You can apply your lashes with a pair of tweezers or with your fingers. Grip the false lashes from the centre, and gently place them on top of (and as close as possible to) your natural lash line. They should be attached to the base of your eyelid, not to your eyelashes.

5. Using your fingertips or a pair of tweezers, carefully squeeze the strip lashes and your natural lashes together along the base of your eyes for maximum hold.

Tips for removing false eyelashes

Nothing can take your eye makeup to the next level quite like a good quality set of full and fluttery false lashes. If removed in a rush, false lashes can irritate your natural lashes and in some cases the skin around the eye. Plus, continuous aggressive tugging of lashes can lead to premature wrinkling of the delicate eye area. So before you hurriedly whip off those strips again, read on to find out how to remove false eyelashes the right way.

Step 1

Start by applying an oil-based eye makeup remover or a small amount of baby oil to the tip of a cotton bud, and gently running it along the lash line. This will work to break up the lash glue or bond, allowing the lash to slide off without the need for pulling.

Step 2

Pinch the lash from the outer edge using your fingertips and gently pull the false lash away from your lash line, until it has all come away from your skin.

Step 3

Once the lash is removed, soak a pad in eye makeup remover and wipe over your eyes to get rid of the rest of your eye makeup and any glue residue.

Step 4

For those who want to reuse their false lashes, cleaning them properly will help them last longer. Start by applying an oil-free eye makeup remover to a cotton swab, then gently rub along the false eyelashes as well as the band of the lashes as this is where the product builds up. Once clean, allow them to air dry well.

Beauty tip

To ensure your natural lashes are looked after, especially if you wear falsies regularly, use eyelash serums and conditioners to encourage growth and definition.
