The benefits of honey for your skin

24 August 2021 | By Martinique Stevens

Honey is chock-full of anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and wound-healing properties, which makes it the perfect addition to your beauty routine.

Sweet, sticky and simply delicious, there are few things not to love about honey. And while we’re all familiar with the mouthwatering ways it can be used in both savoury and sweet dishes, you might be surprised to learn that it is also good for your skin.

How honey helps your skin

- It is a natural humectant, which means it locks moisture into your skin.
- It soothes skin conditions like eczema.
- It fights off acne-causing bacteria thanks to anti-bacterial polyphenolic compounds.
- Its anti-fungal properties can keep dandruff at bay.
- Natural enzymes gently exfoliate the skin.

Ways to use honey in your beauty routine

While you’re in the shower allow the aroma of honey-scented shower gels like LUX Botanicals Lotus & Honey Body Wash Honey, The Body Shop Almond Milk & Honey Shower Cream, or Himalaya Oatmeal & Honey Scrub to put a smile on your face.

Once you’re out of the shower, smooth a honey-infused body cream like Oh So Heavenly Creme Oil Collection Body Lotion Pure Honey & Almond Oil to soften and moisturise skin.

The Clicks Purifying Peel-off Honey Face Mask soothes and brightens skin with a trio of active ingredients including honey, aloe, and jasmine, and also includes soothing chamomile.

And finally, to add an extra dose of honey-infused flair, spritz a honey-noted fragrance on for good measure. Our favourites are DKNY Nectar Love with its spring-like scent of honey, yellow freesia and citruses, or the sexy gardenia, blood orange and honey bouquet of Jean Paul Gaultier’s Scandal.

You can also whip up these DIY honey treatments. Always use raw honey, as it’s unprocessed and doesn’t contain added sugars.

For exfoliation: Mix a few tablespoonfuls of raw honey with equal parts of plain yoghurt and oatmeal. Yoghurt contains lactic acid which is a chemical exfoliator that is gentle on even the most sensitive of skins, while the oatmeal works to give some physical exfoliation.

For glow: Quick and easy... Smooth on some raw honey and let sit for 15-20 minutes.
