Having acne-prone or sensitive skin doesn’t mean you have to forgo makeup. Use these tips and products from The Body Shop to get the looks you want while also keeping your skin happy.

A great makeup look is a massive confidence boost, but if you have sensitive skin or you’re prone to breakouts, you’ll know that the decision to wear make-up often comes at the cost of inflamed, irritated skin later. Only, it doesn’t have to be that way. These make-up tips give your skin TLC, while allowing you to unleash your fabulous creativity.

Prep your skin

Applying make-up over acne begins with correctly preparing the skin beforehand. A cleansed and moisturised face is the most important step in creating a smooth, healthy-looking base on which to apply your make-up.

Opt for oil-free makeup

When looking for primers, foundations, concealers or face powders, be sure you're choosing formulas that are oil-free and non-acnegenic (which means it's tested on acne-prone skin and the products are not shown to promote a breakout). The Body Shop's Fresh Nude Foundation is enriched with vitamin E and Community Fair Trade organic aloe vera, which is suitable for sensitive skin.

Use a mattifying primer

A primer is used to not only make makeup last longer but also to even out your complexion for smooth make-up application. If you have acne-prone skin, you can use a mattifying primer to help smooth out your pores while still preparing your face for make-up. The Body Shop Hemp Serum-In-Primer preps your skin for fresh, long-lasting make-up, and leaves it feeling plumped with moisture, softer and instantly hydrated.

Use a light-weight foundation

The next move is to choose an appropriate foundation. It's important to get the right colour match. Something that is too bright or dark will attract attention to the acne. Choose a solution that is both light and oil-free. You may be tempted to cover up your acne with thick layers of makeup, but that's where most people go wrong. Applying foundation in very thin layers with a light hand is the secret to a natural and concealed look. Use a The Body Shop Beauty Blender to make it look more natural. Don't use your makeup to cover up, but rather to balance out your skin tone. The Body Shop Second Skin Tint is a lightweight formula that moisturises and helps protect skin, while providing light, natural-looking coverage.

Conceal and set

The goal with applying concealer is to be as gentle as possible. Apply using the tapping technique and never a swiping motion, which can irritate the skin. Once you've covered everything and are pleased with the outcome, you'll want to use a setting spray to seal it all in place. We recommend The Body Shop All Day Long Set Spray.
